In late 1913, at the age of 71, Bierce traveled to Mexico to observe the Mexican Revolution firsthand. He joined the army of rebel leader Pancho Villa as an observer. His last known communication was a letter written from Chihuahua in December 1913, stating he was leaving for an "unknown destination".
