Born out of global necessity in 2022, Gijon was granted a rare, single-year license to host an event. This opportunity arose because the typical Asian tour swing was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving a gap in the tennis calendar that this industrial-turned-tourist hub in northwestern Spain was eager to fill.
