After a classmate commits suicide due to relentless bullying, Chen Nian becomes the new target of a group of "mean girls". The abuse escalates from classroom humiliation to physical violence and psychological trauma.

One night, Chen Nian saves a street-smart youth named Xiao Bei (Liu Beishan) from being beaten by thugs. The two form a deep, protective bond. Xiao Bei agrees to walk her to school every day and shield her from her attackers.

Their lives are further entangled when a violent incident occurs, leading to a police investigation. To ensure Chen Nian can still take her exams and have a shot at her "better days," Xiao Bei attempts to take the blame for a serious crime.

The narrative follows Chen Nian, a high school student living in an impoverished household. Her primary goal is to excel in the Gaokao—China’s grueling university entrance exam—which she views as her only ticket to a better life.
