Born in Birmingham and raised in Bournville, Jones discovered her passion for performing at the Central Junior Television workshop at age 11. She made her professional debut at 12 in the television film The Treasure Seekers (1996) before gaining early fame as the mischievous Ethel Hallow in the popular children's series The Worst Witch . While pursuing her acting career, she remained dedicated to her education, studying English at Wadham College, Oxford, where she was a prominent figure in the university's drama scene. Jones transitioned to adult roles with a series of acclaimed performances that showcased her "scholarly" approach to character work. Her major breakthrough came in the 2011 independent film Like Crazy , where her raw, largely improvised performance earned her a Special Jury Prize at Sundance.
