The band consists of two real-life couples: Colbie Caillat with her then-fiancé Justin Kawika Young , and husband-and-wife Jason Reeves and Nelly Joy . They chose to "lean on [their] love for each other" to act out both the "before" and "after" of the broken romance portrayed in the video.

The band described the video as a reminder to show love openly before it is too late. Song Background and Production

"What Could've Been" was released on September 6, 2019, as the lead single for the country-pop quartet . Directed by Patrick Tracy and filmed in Franklin, Tennessee, the official music video visualizes a "split-screen heartbreak story" that explores how a failed romance might have looked if things had ended differently. Video Narrative and Visual Themes

The video prominently uses mirrors as "memory triggers". While the band members sit alone reminiscing in a house, the reflections in the mirrors show alternate, happy outcomes of their past relationships.
