The film is based on the true story of Piero Chiambretti, a Italian therapist who, in the 1980s, started working with a young boy known as "Il bambino nascosto" (The Hidden Child). The boy, allegedly a victim of sexual abuse, was referred to Chiambretti by a local psychiatrist. As Chiambretti begins to work with the boy, he becomes increasingly obsessed with uncovering the truth about the boy's past and the trauma he has suffered.
