She began her religious life with the Sisters of Loreto in Ireland and India, teaching for two decades.

In 1950, with Vatican approval, she founded the Missionaries of Charity to attend to the "dying and diseased".

At age twelve, she felt a call to serve God and spread the love of Christ.

In 1946, while traveling to Darjeeling, she felt a calling to leave the convent and live among the poorest of the poor in the slums of Calcutta. Founding the Missionaries of Charity

Born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Skopje, Ottoman Empire (now North Macedonia) on August 26, 1910.

The focus was to provide care and dignity to those rejected by society, including lepers, the hungry, and orphans.
