Released in 2006, Shiny Gold was born from the collective anxiety of a fanbase that feared Nintendo would never return to the Johto region. Built on the engine of Pokémon FireRed (GBA), it was a "near-identical" remake of the original Pokémon Gold . It provided updated graphics, new sprites, and a polished engine that the aging Game Boy Color hardware could no longer match.
