The episode takes place over a single intense night at Niylah's trading post. Having fled Arkadia, the group—including Clarke, Bellamy, Jasper, Octavia, Monty, and Sinclair—works to remove the AI chip from Raven's mind before she can alert A.L.I.E. to their location. While searching for parts to build an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) to fry the chip, Monty is confronted by his own mother, Hannah, who is also under A.L.I.E.'s control. To save Octavia, Monty is forced to shoot and kill his mother—a devastating moment that permanently changes his character.

Using a salvaged wristband from season one and the EMP, the group successfully shorts out the chip. Clarke uses her knowledge as a "Flamekeeper" (learned from Titus) to surgically remove the liquefied remains of the chip from Raven’s neck. Why It Matters
